38. Making Friends

‘Come on Lily, you can do this… Just ten more minutes to go…’ Gritting her teeth, Lily punched at the keypad of her treadmill determinedly, quickening her pace as she strove to keep up with the gradually increasing speed the machine was going at. Soon after settling in Willow Creek she’d been handed a free membership at the local gym, which she knew she would be using frequently due to the demanding physical nature of her new job.

Which she still couldn’t believe she had. Stretching her arms out, she tried her hardest to suppress the smile that crept over her face whenever she thought about her luck. 250 other people had applied for that job! 250! And out of all of them it had been she who had landed the coveted role at the Space Agency.

a

Not that it was going to a breeze, mind you. She still could hardly believe the amount of training that was required; while Lily naturally enjoyed working out (a joy she discovered had grown as she aged), it seemed she was spending every spare minute chasing her own records at the gym these days. And she was only five minutes from breaking –

‘Oh, flapping flamingos!!’

b

Lost in thought, Lily missed a step and had to grab onto the treadmill’s handlebars to stop herself flying off the end completely. Jabbing frantically at the keypad she managed to slow the machine down just enough so she could get her stride back, wiping her brow in relief at the near miss. At least it’s still early and there’s nobody about, she thought. It would have been so embarrassing if –

‘You were lucky there!’ Lily’s heart skipped a beat as the deep voice startled her. Whipping her head round she saw a man working out on the weights machine directly behind her, clearly lost in his own work out.

Then she saw him.

Tall. Dark. Rugged. Handsome. And the sole witness to one of the most embarrassing gym mishaps she’d suffered.

Well done, Lily. Good job.

c

Grinning his perfect teeth at her, the mysterious vision of perfection started up the treadmill next to hers before jumping on. ‘Don’t worry about it, happens all the time,’ he chuckled. Lily could’ve sworn she saw a wink through his sunglasses.

‘Ever happened to you, though?’

‘Not in a long time, thank goodness! I don’t think I’ve seen you in here before, are you a newbie?’

‘Only to the area! I’ll blame it on the unfamiliar machinery, I think’ Lily laughed, starting to glow a little. It wasn’t just her training that was causing her cheeks to flush now…

‘Quick thinking! I like it,’ the man smiled, barely paying attention to his treadmill yet never missing a beat. ‘Good to know I haven’t been walking around here with my eyes closed. I thought I would have remembered a face like yours if I’d seen it before now. So, what brings a girl like you to the Creek?’

Lily giggled, trying to keep herself under control before she got too shrill. Is he flirting with me!? ‘Work, actually! I’m, er, I’m the new intern over at the Space Agency!’

d

‘The new intern?! Isn’t that a one in a million position?’

‘Not quite. One in 250….’

The man whistled. ‘That’s still pretty impressive! Good on you… Erm, I don’t know your name?’

Lily couldn’t do anything to hide her blushes now. ‘I’m Lily. Lily Rivers.’

‘Well Lily, Lily Rivers, I’ve no doubt we’ll run into one another again some day. Trainee astronauts need all the exercise they can get, am I right?’

‘I think I’ll definitely be spending a bit of time here, yes!’

‘Good,’ the man replied, staring directly at her with a smoulder. Or at least, Lily thought he was. It was difficult to tell through his sunglasses.

‘I didn’t catch your name?’ she asked tentatively as she hopped reluctantly off her treadmill. She had to be at the Space Agency in two hours time.

e

‘Probably because I didn’t give you it! I’m J. Huntington III. See you around, beautiful…’

*

Checking her reflection in the gym’s bathroom after her much needed shower, J’s words played around Lily’s mind. See you around, beautiful…

f

Beautiful. He’d called her beautiful. Interesting…

  1. Yay! A new chapter! While you say that you posted it on October 1st, I received the email at 8 pm on September 30th. So you’re still good in my book. XD

It’s funny, when Lily was a teenager, she always seemed more like the girly girl type, so when she went all sporty as a young adult, I was rather surprised… XD But she seems to be doing well for herself. I have to say though… My initial impression of J. Huntington III is not necessarily a good one. He seemed rather pompous. He could be a good guy, but I think I might need to warm up to him…

You sims made references made me chuckle. Game of groans… Humans… It was pretty funny. Aidan doesn’t seem too bad. Granted… He does play a sim version of a game that I love. Which always wins points in my book. XD It really stinks that Freya is in such a rut… I hope that she can get out of it soon…

Great chapter! I love both Freya and Lily… I don’t know if I’m going to be able to pick between the 2..!

    • Hahaha, good stuff! I think to anyone west of the UK it’ll be fine :p
Yeah, I had thought that Lily was going to be all stereotypically girly then when she and Freya aged up back in TS3 she randomly rolled the athletic trait, it really threw me! Decided to go with it though, for something a little different 🙂
Thanks for reading, and for commenting!! I’m sure you’ll make the right decision :p

  2. Yay! Awesome chapter…once again. 🙂 I must admit I am in love with Freya’s character and really want to see where things go with her and Aidan. I know she’s got a few more masterpieces left in her still. And Lily’s great, too, but J. Huntington III…not so much. Your Sims references, especially Humans, cracked me up. So funny. Loved it!

    • Thank you! I’m pleased you enjoyed it 🙂 Hahaha, glad the references were appreciated! Can never decide if they’re too cheesy etc, so always good to know they’re going down well!

Thanks for reading, and for commenting 🙂

  3. I swear I nearly cried laughing at Aidan playing “Humans” on the computer at the library! Too funny! I love your sense of humour in your chapters and how your Sims always say “oh gnomes!” lol, classic comedy!

Being the struggling, introverted novelist that I am, I of course will be rooting for my girl Freya to take over the legacy officially. 😉

I loved seeing some of the townies in this chapter. I think EA did a pretty good job on the premades this time, I’ve yet to see a truly horrifying premade Sim. I’m glad Lily found a hunky guy at the gym but I’m pretty sure J has the noncommittal trait so proceed with extreme caution, Lily!

As usual, a wonderful chapter. I was so excited to see an update!

    • Thanks! I’m so pleased you enjoyed it 🙂 I agree about the premades, compared to the Sims of Twinbrook they’re a massive improvement!!

Thanks for reading and for commenting, as ever 🙂 Means a lot Ashleigh!!

  4. Hey Sian, just leaving another comment to let you know I’ve been re-reading your Rivers Legacy and it’s just as good the second time around! I hope you’ve been doing well! I’ve got a couple new chapters up on my blog but updates still aren’t quite as frequent as I’d like (story of our lives, eh?). I can’t wait for the next chapter you put out, whether it’s a day or a year from now, they’re always well-worth the wait! ❤

  5. Hi there!
I recently found your blog – and read the whole story about the Rivers family. I was having a very long Sims break, but I was really glad when I saw that your last post is pretty recent and that you are planning to continue.

I found your stories really inspiring and sweet. ❤
